Located in the Wiltshire village of Shrewton, Zion House is a former chapel and Sunday school that has been dramatically converted into a 4 / 5-bedroom house by the London-based architectural practice Arts, Lettres, Techniques.

The handsome former chapel building, built in 1836, has been left intact externally, while the interior has been transformed into a large, light, open-plan space. A kitchen unit and two ‘pods’, housing a utility room and a small sitting room, occupy part of this spectacular space. Features of the former chapel space include poured concrete floors, underfloor heating and lights set into the floor.

A door from the former chapel space leads to a west-facing sitting room with wonderful views across farmland and meadows. Beyond this room, a converted Victorian extension (originally built as a Sunday school) is now occupied by bedrooms and bathrooms. The addition of internal windows and conservation rooflights encourages light to permeate the space.

Zion House in a rare example of an intelligent and sensitively designed conversion that makes the most of the natural light that pervades the building and retains the charm of the original structure. Featured in a number of journals and magazines including Gardens Illustrated and Vogue, the house also benefits from a west-facing garden that has been landscaped by Helen Dooley Design (www.hdgardens.com), a renowned company whose best-known project is Petersham Nurseries.

Arts, Lettres, Techniques is an architectural practice with a particular interest in conservation and sustainability. Alan Chandler, the co-director, trained at the Architectural Association in London and has worked not only as an architect (previously with Sophie Hicks) but also alongside artists including Richard Wentworth, Elisa Sighicelli and Danny Lane as a technician, filmmaker and photographer.

Shrewton is a small but well-served village located approximately 12 miles north of Salisbury.  In the village there is a pub, a primary and junior school, a doctor’s surgery and a number of shops, including a village butcher. There are also good bus links to Salisbury and many of the area’s best schools, including the Godolphin School, Chafyn Grove School and Dauntsey’s School. The village is situated close to Stonehenge, amongst some of Wiltshire’s most beautiful countryside.

Shrewton is best accessed by road via the nearby A303, which leads onto the M3 to London (the M25 can be reached in approximately 60 minutes). Trains run directly to London Waterloo from Salisbury and Andover (both approximately 12 miles away) with a journey time of approximately 80 minutes.
