Located in a tranquil setting in the Kent countryside, this recently-completed four-bedroom house was designed by the architect Philip Stringer. It is highly energy-efficient, thanks to triple glazing and high thermal insulation and is set in over 1/4 acre of stunning landscaped gardens.

Arranged over a single-storey, the main house is entered via a covered porch which leads to an open plan kitchen / living / dining room. The living / dining area has tiled floors, electric underfloor heating and a wonderful large picture window overlooking the gardens. There are also three double bedrooms (one currently used as a library), a shower room, bathroom and small study area. Two of the bedrooms open out with full-height glazed doors onto the gardens. On the other side of the entrance porch (which has ample storage area) is a further room which could be used as a fourth bedroom.

Gardens surround the house on all sides. A gravel drive leads up one edge of the site, providing turning space and parking for two cars. The gardens to the front of the house are planted with lawn, fruit trees, flowers, grasses and vegetables patches. To the rear of the house a south-facing brick-paved courtyard is surrounded by ornamental planting and borders on a large pond. There is a garden office building, a large shed, two smaller sheds and a greenhouse. The site is surrounded on three sides by pasture and orchard and on the fourth by a neighbouring garden.

The house was designed by Stringer, with the gardens designed by his wife, for their own occupation in 2001-3. It was built on the site of former army barracks that formed part of a searchlight battery in WW2 and some of the materials for the demolished buildings have been recycled by Stringer in this property. Sustainability has been a driving factor in Stringer’s design, as can be seen in the overall energy-efficiency of the building and the fact that it is a timber frame construction (with timber cladding and an aluminium sheeted roof).

Stringer is an experienced and well-respected architect whose career has seen him working at some of Britain’s most celebrated architectural practices including Yorke Rosenberg Mardall and Broadway Malayan and also teaching widely.

The house can be found situated along a farm track in the Kent countryside. Ware is a small village located between Canterbury and Ramsgate. The closest town is Sandwich (five miles away) which has a range of shops and services, with further facilities, including a mainline train station, at Canterbury. The coastal towns of Deal and Whitstable can be reached by car in under half an hour and both the Dover ferry and Folkestone tunnel crossings are easily accessible. The east Kent area is becoming increasingly renowned for its wide variety of cultural activities and outstanding food outlets and restaurants.
