This Victorian townhouse in the popular Gloucestershire town of Stroud has been impressively extended by the renowned USE Architects. The four-bedroom semi-detached house is within easy walking distance of the town centre and train station and benefits from front and back gardens, the latter being approximately 100 ft in length and the location of a studio building.

The front door opens into a hallway that leads you to the wonderful kitchen / dining room. This space has largely been designed by USE and features bespoke kitchen units, designed by the architects, along one wall, and full height and full width glazing at one end. The glass doors slide open onto an outdoor terrace, enabling the external and internal spaces to become one area when weather allows. A roof light and clerestory windows bring further light into this area. There is underfloor heating beneath an engineered oak floor.

The kitchen / dining area opens onto the living room – a full-width door allows this space to be open plan or closed off. There is an open fire in the living room. There is also a WC on the ground floor. Steps lead down to a storage area in the cellar and upstairs to the first floor.

The first floor features a bedroom and large, recently refurbished family bathroom. On the second floor are a further two bedrooms and a spiral staircase that leads to the fourth bedroom.

The house is set back from the road, with steps leading up to a path that leads through a garden to the front door. At the rear there is a landscaped garden, arranged over a four levels. The lowest level is a terrace, accessed from the sliding glazed doors in the kitchen / dining room. This is a great space for outdoor dining, made largely from slate tiles and oak sleepers. The next level is largely lawn, with more oak sleepers leading up to the well-insulated studio building which can function as guest accommodation / 5th bedroom as well as a studio / office.

USE are an award-winning London-based architecture practice led by Jo Hagan. Perhaps their most published and prominent project is Clerkenwell House, also known as the Gap House, a seven-storey building on Golden Lane in London that has been slotted into a narrow gap between existing buildings. Hagan is known for both his residential work and work on high-profile restaurant projects in London.

The house can be found on one of Stroud’s most sought after roads. The Gloucestershire town of Stroud stands at the meeting point of the Five Valleys, and is surrounded by the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in all directions. The house is located in a quiet residential area of the town, within easy reach of its shops and cafés – Waitrose is within 10 mins walking distance. Stroud also has a national award-winning farmers market and numerous highly-regarded schools. The larger town of Cheltenham is 12 miles away and the house is a 30 minute drive from junction 15 of the M4. The railway station, from where direct trains to London Paddington take approximately one and a half hours, is a 10-minute walk away.
