This three-bedroom end of terrace Victorian house in one of the most vibrant areas of Bristol has undergone a substantial refurbishment and extension by the architect Federica Vasetti. Created with an exacting eye for detail by Vasetti for herself and her family over the course of three years (between 2004 and 2007), the project has resulted in an outstanding, open-plan house with numerous engaging features and a wonderful landscaped garden.

Accommodation includes a first floor with two bedrooms and a large family bathroom. The main bedroom, at the front, extends across the full width of the property and features and exposed brick chimney breast. It is the ground floor, however, that is perhaps the most impressive aspect of the house. The front door leads into a long hall way, alongside with is a third bedroom. The hall leads to a kitchen with breakfast bar, designed by Vasetti to be a simple, functional space with stainless steel worktops. The kitchen opens out onto the living / dining room, a large part of which is Vasetti’s extension. Full height glazed doors lead out onto the garden whilst wood flooring and sky lights add to the appeal of this excellent room.

A canopy and small terrace at the rear of the house are a defining architectural feature, creating sense of communication between the inside and outside space of the property. The canopy is constructed from 200 year old reclaimed timber, a material that also runs through the roof of the living room (again reinforcing the blurred boundaries between inside and out). In an interview in ‘Build It’ magazine, Vasetti explains how:

“the building controls inspector was quite dubious out the reclaimed timber, as it wasn’t graded. But, when he saw it and discovered it was of exceptional quality his concerns evaporated. I wanted to use reclaimed timber as the sharp lines mixed with the irregular timber gives a great effect.”

The house can be found on Greenbank Road in Southville, a thriving area of central Bristol just south of the River Avon. The area was largely dominated by the celebrated Victorian tobacco factories and their workers. Today many of these industrial buildings have been converted into apartments, theatres, bars and venues. The most renowned is the Tobacco Factory (a short walk from Greenbank Road) which houses a restaurant, theatre, brewery and other facilities. There are many more exciting arts venues and renowned restaurants nearby.

Bristol city centre and the main station, Bristol Temple Meads, are a short distance in the car or by bike, or approximately 25 minutes by foot. Bristol has recent been named the best city in Britain by the Sunday Times, who say that “it has everything: great shopping, buzzing social scene and glorious scenery”.
