Designed by Jerry Harrall, one of the UK’s leading authorities on sustainable architecture, as his own home, this 4/5 bedroom house has been the recipient of numerous environmental awards.

The property is a single-storey, earth-sheltered house situated on an attractive 3/4 acre plot on the Norfolk / Lincolnshire border. It is located within 2 miles of the centre of Long Sutton, a thriving market town, and close to the beautiful Wash marshes.

Accommodation includes a central living space with floor-to-ceiling glazing, a kitchen / dining room, three bedrooms, a family bathroom and a further master bedroom with a dressing room and en suite shower room (the internal area measures approximately 2,000 sq ft / 185 sq m in total). There are two good-sized outbuildings that could potentially be used as studio space. There is a driveway to the front of the property that provides parking space for numerous cars. At the rear is a large, secluded, level garden backing onto open fields. Formerly a paddock, t is now largely lawn, with an area of orchard and also terracing closer to the house.

Jerry Harrall of Search Architects designed the house as a result of numerous years of extensive research at Ph.D. level into sustainable dwellings. The house is earth-sheltered and the front facade is little more than an ivy-covered earth wall with a glass canopy above the entrance door. To the rear, the house is aligned to allow for maximum passive solar gain. Extensive insulation further improves the outstanding energy efficiency which results in minimal energy bills. Harrall’s research and experience of building sustainable housing has made him a much respected figure in his field and he has lectured and written widely on the subject, with his latest book due to be published by Thames & Hudson in the near future.

The house can be found set back from Gedney Road, close to the small towns of Long Sutton and Holbeach, both of which offer a wide range of shops, pubs, restaurants and schools. The larger towns of Spalding and King’s Lynn are within easy driving distance and offer further services including railway stations and cultural and sporting facilities. The celebrated beaches of the North Norfolk coast are approximately 30 – 45 minutes by car (depending on which beach you want to go to).

Please note that all areas, measurements and distances given in these particulars are approximate and rounded. The text, photographs and floor plans are for general guidance only.
