This award-winning 4-bedroom modern house with off-street parking has a wonderful location on a private mews in the Barnsbury conservation area, just off Upper Street. It is the middle house of a group of three built in 2003 to a design by the architects Buckley Gray Yeoman.

Accommodation measures almost 2,000 sq ft over 3 storeys, to include 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. The property is entered via a dramatic double-height atrium, which leads to an outstanding double-aspect reception / kitchen / dining room. Part of this space is double-height, with large glazed folding doors that open onto a terrace. Each bedroom also has direct access to its own area of outside space, and natural light is brought into the house in clever ways via lightwells and skylights. The property is finished to a high specification throughout, and is fitted with an integrated audiovisual system.

The house is discreetly set behind gates, with an off-street parking space at the front. It is accessed from Liverpool Road, a short walk from the shops and restaurants on Upper Street. The Underground is available at Highbury & Islington (Victoria Line) and Angel (Northern Line), both of which are just one stop from the international facilities of King’s Cross. Green space can be found at Barnard Park and Highbury Fields.

The houses on Haven Mews occupy the site of a former warehouse that sat between four rows of Georgian terraces, with access through a narrow gate. Buckley Gray Yeoman accepted the sensitivities of the site and came up with a clever scheme that occupied no more than the footprint of the garage and rose no higher than the original. The few windows that look towards the Georgian terraces are screened with timber and bamboo planting, while the rear of the terrace facing the retained garden wall is mostly glazed. Light flows through the section but, unusually for central London, there are few views of the neighbours. The project received a Housing Design Award in 2005.
