All Things Bright: five creatives make a case for colour at home

It’s with much delight that spring is almost here – and as the days are getting brighter, we’re thinking about how to brighten up our living spaces, too. Perhaps there’s no simpler way than to decorate with a spritz of colour. If you require some references on how to get this right, there’s ample over on Instagram. We’ve scrolled through the feeds of some of our favourite colour connoisseurs and are sharing the pigment-ripe interiors posts that are inspiring us the most right now. And if you want even more inspiration, then give us a follow on @themodernhouse, too.

@alfredbramsen
Illustrator Alfred Bramsen’s pastel-hued apartment is the stuff sweet dreams are made of. While the white-walled living space is also tutorial in how to tastefully apply colour to the home – here, candy-coloured objects, candles, textiles and tulips sing against the pared-back backdrop – it’s the kitchen that’s caught our eye. There’s cabinetry painted in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Stone Blue’, baby-pink splashback tiles, and pops of lemon and orange courtesy of Alfred’s homeware – alongside some actual fruit too. Note the colourful cupboard door knobs: Alfred nods to his Danish heritage with these decorative details made by Copenhagen-based artist Nina Nørgaard. Making an early-morning coffee is a lot more enticing when the kitchen looks like this.
@raven__smith
This light-filled corner of the author and journalist Raven Smith’s home wouldn’t look out of place where tropics permanently soar, thanks to its juicy palette of sunny saffron and rouge. The colour combination is at once playful and polished; one we think might even put a twinkle in the critical eye of Le Corbusier. The yellow of the walls has been cast over the ceiling too, a bold decorative technique we encourage when the colour is as pleasing as this. The fun doesn’t stop here: tour through the rest of Raven’s home via his Instagram Stories, where he has been chronicling his home renovation, to find plenty of head-turning tones elsewhere, from graphic stripes in pinky hues in the bedroom to fruity green walls in the bathroom.
@lucywilliams02
As the followers of Lucy Williams can vouch, the tastemaker often waxes lyrical about her love of blue: “Blue is the magic colour,” she declares. She has a particular liking for that of the sky on a bright day, and the uplifting hue appears throughout her home. While curating a space with different shades of the same colour is a smart move, we’re also advocates for placing colours that appear on different sides of the wheel together. Just look how pleasantly this amber-hued corner contrasts with the walls. (Side note: we’re coveting the delightful sofa cushion from sustainable fashion brand Bode, too). If you want to see more of Lucy’s well-decorated home, which she’s in the midst of renovating, head over to @lucywilliamshome.
@themellowmaximalist
If you’ve been following the home renovation of Tom Baxendale, also known by his appropriately named Instagram handle @themellowmaximalist, you’ll have witnessed the designer transform an apartment within a Victorian workhouse into a mood-lifting, rainbow-bright haven. There’s barely a single nook or cranny without a splash of considered colour, each jewel tone complementing the next. One of our favourite things here, however, is how he’s paid plenty of attention to the spaces that are usually left unloved: the ceiling of the bedroom is painted cobalt blue; the internal arches of the window vermilion red. It's a simple trick that packs a punch. And spoiler alert: the rest of Tom’s home is as joyful as his bedroom.
@untillemonsrsweet
Nothing says spring like a vase full of blooming daffodils – but it's the way their petals match this yellow interior that brings us joy. The home of interiors enthusiast Natasha Landers is a love letter to vivid tones, such as forest green and deep blue. We’re highlighting the brilliant kitchen here, but this isn't a one-room affair: the rest of her house is equally as bold and bright. Lemon – the eagle-eyed may have noticed the word in her handle – has a starring role and ties everything neatly together. We like it so much that we've even planned a visit to her home very soon.
