To mark the arrival of summer, we have put together some garden inspiration, sourced from our homes currently for sale. Whether you are the proud owner of a few potted plants in a small urban yard or have acres to play with, there is enough inspiration in here to get your green thumbs twitching.

It probably comes as little surprise that the current owner of this 1950s house in the Marshwood Vale, near the Dorset coast, is a landscape designer, given the beauty of the outdoor space. The design here is about embracing the wild setting, using wildflower meadows as part of the scheme to blend the garden into the surrounding fields. Elsewhere, a productive vegetable patch and fruit trees like cherry, pear, damson, apple and plum make this a truly bucolic bolthole.

No matter the size of your garden, you’re going to want to be able to indulge in some alfresco dining. Take garden inspiration from this maisonette on London Road in Forest Hill, which has glazed doors that open onto a decked space with an outdoor dining table that is sheltered by a mature Japonica – the perfect place to shade yourself from the midday sun whilst enjoying a bottle or two.

Hidden behind a pink-painted brick façade, this former pianola factory in Kentish Town boasts an expansive south-facing garden. Plentiful vegetable beds and free-flowing nectar from six beehives can be found within this bountiful garden, proving that you don’t need a small holding in the countryside to put self-grown food on the table.

Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire
A sunken garden landscaped by Chelsea Flower Show Gold Award-winner Andy Sturgeon provides a link between a restored 200-year-old coaching house and two annexe cottages designed by renowned architects Aldington, Craig and Collinge at this home in Buckinghamshire. The lesson here is to incorporate moments for reflection and contemplation in your garden, which has been achieved here by a peaceful seating area overlooking a Koi Carp pond.

The Sett, Totland, Isle of Wight
You don’t have to be outside to appreciate beautiful outdoor space, as this RIBA Award-winning home on the Isle of Wight proves, with floor-to-ceiling glazing providing views across the verdant grounds. The architecture here is a lesson in how to configure spaces to connect with the natural world, with an apple tree providing a focal point for an internal courtyard and views outwards framed by landscaped fruit trees.

Putnoe Lane, Bedford, Bedfordshire
For the green-fingered gardeners, the expansive outdoor space at this 1930s Art Deco house will provide much garden inspiration to keep you busy on these long warm evenings. From the flower bed surrounding the crescent-shaped pond to the extensive vegetable patch and greenhouse, the garden here is about utilising every corner of outdoor space.
