Shower under a Frangipani tree, luxuriate in a cinnamon-walled spa or stroll down the hill to the beach. This Sri Lankan villa is serene, relaxed and intimate. Overlooking a pristine crescent-shaped beach, it offers four bedrooms – all with en-suite bathrooms – an Ayurvedic spa and an infinity pool with sweeping sea views. It was included by Condé Nast Traveller in its selection of the 25 best beach villas in the world, and was named on the hotlist of the Sunday Times Travel Magazine.
The house comes with four full-time staff, including a gourmet chef. Organic food from the sea and garden is available for those seeking a detox; affiliated therapists can provide massages and Ayurvedic treatments in the spa, and visiting and local yoga instructors offer private lessons at the house as well as group sessions at a nearby studio.
Only a handful of private homes have direct access to the white-sand beach. The warm, clear waters of the Indian Ocean are ideal for body-boarding and swimming all year round. Fishing boats land in the morning and fresh fish can be bought directly from the boats. Around the rocky headland from the cove lies a long, curving bay with further enticing spots for sunbathing and beach-combing. Boating, fishing and snorkelling trips can be arranged, when guests may encounter pods of playful dolphins and migrating whales.
The house is located on Seenimodara Bay, a cashew grove just outside the fishing village of Tangalle, on the south coast of the island. Among the nearby sites is the third-century BC Mulkirigala Temple, cut deep into the rock, with its ancient paintings and statues of Buddhas. The area is also well known for bird-watching, animal safaris and jungle tours. Parrots, fishing eagles and monkeys can be spotted from the pool terrace, and peacocks often leave wet footprints on the floor of the pavilion.
