Tucked away in the lush grounds of an old Mayan plantation, Casa de Maquinas is a 160 year old estate offering spacious, flexible holiday accommodation in the Yucatán region of Mexico.
The house restoration was carried out by renowned Mexican architect Salvador Reyes Rios and his wife Josefina Larrain. Most of the furniture was designed by Salvador and made locally. Throughout Casa de Maquinas, there is a striking contrast between its utilitarian past and the luxury holiday property it has now become.
The accommodation is generously spread across two buildings (Casa Vieja and Casa Nueva) and can be rented individually or as one unit. It comprises five bedrooms and a loft, five bathrooms, a kitchen, and two living rooms. Between the two buildings is an open-air living area and dining pavilion (the loggia) surrounded by fish-filled ponds. From here, an enclosed spiral staircase leads to a rooftop terrace and star-viewing platform. The grounds are filled with tropical plants and fruit trees and feature two pools and a bocce ball (boules) court. Framing the entire hacienda are dry-stacked stonewalls, tall hedges and walls, cleverly created from metal cages filled with local limestone.
Casa de Maquinas is 35 minutes by car from the Yucatan’s capital city Mérida. A vibrant and cultural centre, Mérida has an abundance of beautiful colonial buildings, museums, art galleries, restaurants, and shops. Within a 60 minute round car trip, are many historical Mayan sites, including Chichen Itza (just named as one of the modern seven wonders of the world), Uxmal and Mayapan.

Casa Vieja is available on its own and sleeps seven. Or you can rent Casa Vieja and Casa Nueva together - sleeping 13.
NB: During Christmas/New Year, both properties must be rented.
